In this region Kikuyu continues to be the most popular choice for lawn.
It is a soft broad leaf grass, mid green in colour originally from South Africa and makes a good lawn, particularly on large areas. Kikuyu is a fairly hardy grass and readily recovers from damage. With its very vigorous runners, it becomes a rich thick lawn quickly. It prefers full sunlight and loses its colour in frost.
Kikuyu requires frequent mowing in summer and can produce a lot of clippings, especially if it is allowed to grow too tall. It is also very aggresive and invasive, and care will be needed to stop it from taking over paths and garden beds.
Kikuyu should be kept to a height of approximately 30mm to 40mm for optimum growth and appearance. In the warmer months deep watering twice a week may be necessary. You should fertilize your kikuyu lawn at the beginning of Spring, Summer and Autumn to maintain good colour.
